אחרי ההצלחה האדירה של Elephant, ג׳ק ומג וייט בחרו לא לשחזר את הנוסחה אלא להרחיב אותה. יותר פסנתר, יותר ניסויים בצליל, ועדיין אותו בלוז רוק מחוספס שהפך את הצמד לאחד הסיפורים הגדולים של הרוק האלטרנטיבי של שנות האלפיים.

בשנת 2005, כשההד של Seven Nation Army עדיין ריחף באוויר וההצלחה של Elephant כבר הפכה לעובדה בלתי ניתנת לערעור, הוציאו The White Stripes את Get Behind Me Satan. במקום לרכוב עוד סיבוב על אותו הסאונד שהביא אותם לפסגה, ג׳ק ומג וייט החליטו לקחת צעד הצידה ולפתוח את הצליל שלהם לכיוונים חדשים.
הבלוז רוק המחוספס והגיטרות המוכרות של ג׳ק וייט עדיין שם, אבל האלבום הזה מרשה לעצמו לנשום אחרת. הפסנתר מקבל כאן תפקיד מרכזי יותר, ויש גם רגעים של ניסוי בצלילים ובמבנה השירים. הפתיחה עם Blue Orchid מיד מדביקה את האוזן, ומשם הצמד ממשיך להתקדם בלי לעצור לרגע.
The Denial Twist בולט עם משחקי הקלידים והליריקה החדה, בעוד I’m Lonely But I Ain’t That Lonely Yet חושף צד אישי ופגיע יותר בכתיבה של וייט. ב Take Take Take הסאונד מתגלגל ומהדהד בין הערוצים, מסוג השירים שכדאי מאוד לשמוע באוזניות טובות כדי לקלוט את כל השכבות הקטנות שמסתתרות בו.
אחד הרגעים הזכורים ביותר מגיע עם My Doorbell, שיר שמראה עד כמה ג׳ק וייט יכול להיות משכנע גם מאחורי הקלידים. בין לבין מפוזרים עוד רגעים של ריפים חשמליים, פניות מוזיקליות מפתיעות וקטעים כמו The Nurse שמדגישים עד כמה הצמד הזה לא פחד לזוז ממסלול בטוח.
בדיעבד, Get Behind Me Satan נשמע כמו עוד תחנה משמעותית בשיא היצירתי של The White Stripes. צמד שפעל פחות מעשור, אבל השאיר אחריו רצף של אלבומים שהפכו לאבני דרך ברוק של תחילת המאה. גם עשרים שנה אחרי, זה עדיין אלבום שכיף מאוד לחזור אליו. במיוחד כשהמחט פוגשת ויניל טרי והצליל מתחיל להסתובב בחדר. 🎶
